About This Event

"Levels" brings a vibrant new energy to The A.I.R Building in Nihonbashi, transforming it into a one-of-a-kind, multi-sensory entertainment space across five uniquely curated floors. More Than Music invites you to this bold, immersive experience:

• Basement: Feel the heartbeat of live music as handpicked artists fill the room with sounds that will get you dancing all night.
• 1st Floor and 2nd Floor:  Take a breather at the "Hangout Spot," where you can relax and catch up with friends, far from the city's hustle and bustle.
• 3rd Floor: Admire the creative space in the Gallery hosted by The Spilt Ink, featuring works from many unique artists.
• Rooftop: Make your way up to the rooftop for spectacular views and open-air conversations while enjoying the music of our DJs, keeping the energy high all night long.

Tropical Death are a Tokyo based indie rock band. Our music leans heavily towards post hardcore and melodic 90s indie rock, though we dabble in dance punk, disco, dad rock, and whatever else serves the jam. We aim to balance pop sensibilities with subtle complexity, wry humor, and punk aggression. The TD propositum is best conveyed in our visceral live shows, where the band is nourished by your energy and good vibes.

◾️ SOMBRA ◾️

SOMBRA is the pseudonym of the split Montreal & Tokyo based producer/songwriter, Matthew Cataldo. With influences ranging from 90s alternative grunge and industrial to underground house, techno and trip-hop, SOMBRA’s music is introspective and claustrophobic, yet paradoxically colourful and chameleonic.

Self-described as “music to turn off the lights to”, this quasi-ritualistic, and at-times obsessive-compulsive artistic process gives forth to dark, haunting, yet eerily familiar soundscapes. Like a window into the human condition, Cataldo explores themes of desire, animalism, social norms and mental health.

California-native DJ Sean has carved a niche in Tokyo’s vibrant nightlife with his unique “all mix” style, seamlessly blending tech-house, RnB, and Disco, and his event, “RAGTAG Socials,” stands as one of Tokyo’s largest independent events. Over three years, he’s played at clubs like Ce La Vi, Baia, and more. As DJ Sean gears up for upcoming RAGTAG Socials events, his innovative sets continue to embody the rhythmic synergy of California’s ease and Tokyo’s electric ambiance, making every night a rhythmic adventure that resonates with the heart of Tokyo.

“I decided to do something different. Completely different. I wanted to work on a style that I’d been thinking about for a while but never had the time. The pandemic gave me that time and I took full advantage of it. And I created “PopSick Art”. PopSick art is a juxtapose of three artforms that I love, comic book art, graffiti art and classic Hollywood George Hurrell photographs from the 1940’s.” - Johnny (The Spilt Ink)

Happy Healing Salt Art - shioe - is a painting created using salt paints that contain the only natural salt in the world. The purifying power of salt and its clear colors make the paintings a form of color therapy that invigorates both the artist and the viewer. I hope that everyone will feel bright and positive ☆ I draw this with prayer in mind.

“d. Fect is a mixed-media artist whose work merges contemporary art with a post-graffiti aesthetic, drawing from the raw textures of urban decay and the layered histories of vandalized surfaces. Having lived across the United States, Asia, and Europe, his style reflects a global fusion of cultural experiences. By transforming discarded materials into canvases, he explores impermanence, memory, and overlap, layering vibrant markings with fragments of his past to create pieces that resonate with their surroundings.”

◾️ Abstract_japan76 ◾️

My journey into art began in the pandemic, painting with my children to ease their anxiety. In that process I uncovered a deep, long-dormant connection to colour, movement, and emotion. A long-time Tokyo resident and martial arts practitioner, I ground my work in rhythm, breath, flow, and spontaneity. Each painting is a physical and emotional journey shaped by reflection, transformation, and discovery.

Inspired by the contrasts of city and nature, especially sea and sky, my theme is finding balance in chaos, allowing chaos itself to cut through the noise. Bold, intuitive colours evoke memory, energy, and change, inviting viewers to pause, connect, and feel.

◾️ HIKUN ◾️

Born in Tokyo in November 1979, I grew up listening to psychedelic music from the 1960s through to the new sounds of the day. I fell in love with trance and techno culture in my 20s while traveling overseas. Back then, I was dazzling, and although it feels like that time flew by as fast as light, this chapter of my life had a lasting influence on me.

I first started painting during the COVID-19 pandemic. As I create my paintings, I find I become more aware of my feelings, and giving form to the thoughts and images in my mind becomes strangely calming. My first exhibition was at Klein Blue in Jimbocho (April 2024) after which I managed to keep the momentum going with an invitation from Johnny (The Spilt INK) to display my work at Art Tank Vol. 12, 13 and then at the previous event here (Levels) in April this year. I truly appreciate these opportunities, which have inspired me to continue and develop my style. 

Originally abstract, my art has become more pop/collage fusion. Now the door for new challenges and encounters is open again. I hope my new work touches the hearts of those who see it.

◾️ Sangthip Steve ◾️

Steve started honing his skills as an airbrush tattoo artist at music festivals in the UK, Barcelona and on the party island of Ibiza about 20 years ago. Busy making music, he rarely gets away from his computer these days but he decided to get out his designs and UV paint for this event.
