Artist information

Basement

◾️ Jontana ◾️

Who is Jontana? In their own words they are 'Fantastic dance music!'

To give more info, the band is lead by Martin, the lead fiddler of both the famous OAU and the always entertaining Johnsons Motorcar. For Jontana, Martin has put down the violin and picks up the guitar to explore a fresh new soundscape by pairing up with a DJ that brings beats and an electronic vibe. Justin, after hearing samples of their music is excited to book them for their first ever show at the launch of our More Tokyo Music series in Shimokitazawa. Be the first to catch these seasoned professionals on stage.

The band has had its music played on TV and movies in the USA, national radio in Canada and the UK, and has won numerous awards such as “Top 30 Songs of the Year” (BBC Radio Sheffield) and “Top 100 Unsigned Live Bands” (Music Connection Magazine, LA). ◾️Yuima Enya◾️

Yuima Enya was born in Tokyo, moved to the US at the age of 18, and graduated from The New School, a jazz school in New York City. After returning to Japan, she has been involved in various projects such as Latin, Reggae, Afro, Soul, Jazz, etc., and released her original album “MALAKA” in 2022. This year, she released an EP MAKAKA REMIXES, an album of her current projects SUPRE CATS and Thiiird Place, and a cover of Sade by Inokashira Rangers, making her probably the most recorded female singer in Japan today.

◾️Ethno Burst◾️

Founded in 2020, Ethno Burst is an afro-electro duo whose songs are heavily inspired by African tribal rhythms and melodies, whether ancestral or more modern. Based in Paris, the group is very sensitive to respecting the cultures of the African continent and has made it their mission to popularize them through their electronic music. Their goal is to make Africans dance to electro and techno while also introducing African rhythms to other communities. Ethno Burst combines music with aesthetics and wears masks from Western Cameroon, paying tribute to African tradition and showing respect for the land that inspires them so much.

◾️Stèv◾️

Inspired by technology and nature, Stèv explores the balance between synthetic and organic, investigating the shades of modern composition, fresh sonorities and digital art.

His career officially started in 2011 from netlabels, escalating up until reaching Loci Records (label founded and owned by Emancipator), on which he has two significant releases, Elsewhere EP and Beyond Stolen Notes album, while in the meantime he got featured on the Project: Mooncircle Uprising compilation with the exclusive tune Paint Me Like The Sky. His track Winter Train placed 57th in the XLR8R top download chart of 2013, after only two weeks of presence on the website, and was picked up by The Guardian as one of the “nine must-listen new tracks from around the world”. In 2017 he released his EP Broken Mamori on Variables, a record label and multimedia collective based in Turin. The record was promoted on Resident Advisor and XLR8R along with the single Scattered Steams / Dense Water, accompanied by a computer graphic music video realized by digital artist Cy Tone. His second full-length album Dismantle and Refine, released on Variables in 2021, was enriched by precious worldwide collaborations (dutch music producer Julien Mier, UK rapper Rawz, italian singer/songwriter gimlii and albanian-canadian writer/artist Lueda Alia), while working together with visual designer Carola Demarchi, who created an exclusive series of artworks and a virtual reality animation for the track Breath Stretch Training. The record got featured on Kaltblut, Decoded Magazine and Electronic Groove.

He performed live across Italy, Germany and Japan, finding himself sharing the stage with names such as Alex Banks, Phon.o, Clap! Clap!, Synkro, Romare, Shigeto. In 2016 he was invited to perform in USA for the first time at Further Future festival in Las Vegas, alongside artists like Four Tet, Nicolas Jaar, Daedelus, Andy Stott, Telefon Tel Aviv, The Pharcyde and Caribou.

◾️Ross Verik◾️

VERIK is the solo project of Scottish electronic music producer and vocalist Ross Verik, centred around the concept of truth, “veritas.”

Expect driving beats and bass fused with haunting synths and an electrifying live vocal performance, oscillating between the melodic and the menacing.
This debut full-length one-man show will feature brand new solo material as well as a selection of favourites from his other projects SURGYN (UK) and VERJ (Japan)

—————————

◾️Eshericks◾️

Eshericks is a producer and DJ based in Tokyo. He invites listeners into a mysterious space with delicate sequences and hard sounds. Focusing on breaks, he was nominated at Breakspoll 2010 and has toured as a DJ in the UK, Spain, and Switzerland. He has released remixes through labels such as Perfecto Records, Skullduggery, Black Hole, and Armada. His first single, 'Motion,' features vocals by Kirsty Hawkshaw.

—————————

◾️Luke Hobbs◾️

You’re compelled to continue swinging your body to the tempo as DJ Luke Hobbs emerges from the smoky backdrop gifting the masses with one final set. If you were to visually capture this organic sound on canvas, you’d stand for a moment upon the piece and claim it as avant-garde. Hobbs has an immaculate way of capturing music at its very core, and the result is almost an animalistic blend of big disco, rock, and accidental tribal.  The urge to dance is transfixing, and you surrender yourself.

—————————

◾️Emergency Oxygen◾️

As the airplane we call life is going down we all need some Emergency Oxygen, something to make us forget the impending doom, the imminent crash. As you catch your first breath of it your lungs fill up with up-tempo beats, you feel invigorated as it binds with your hemoglobin, pumping on the electronic drum. Dance is an unavoidable side effect, when the voltaic rhythms build and the lasers flash the oxygen expands into any space, ready for a spark.

This Tokyo based French electro/house producer influenced by Daft Punk, JUSTICE or Kavinsky fills up any room with enough energy to ignite a blazing fire every time you see him live; however he also knows how to turn down the flame to a pleasant candle light. like bellows, supplying and depriving oxygen, audiences are at his mercy.

Let yourself be saved by Emergency Oxygen.

◾️The Spilt Ink◾️

“I decided to do something different. Completely different. I wanted to work on a style that I’d been thinking about for a while but never had the time. The pandemic gave me that time and I took full advantage of it. And I created “PopSick Art”. PopSick art is a juxtapose of three artforms that I love, comic book art, graffiti art and classic Hollywood George Hurrell photographs from the 1940’s.” - Johnny (The Spilt Ink)
